Fraxel laser has been recently approved by the FDA for the treatment of melasma and is fast beco ming one of the most popular forms of treatment for the condition.

What is melasma?

Melasma is a skin condition which causes brown coloured patches on the facial skin. The condition is thought to be caused by the stimulation of melanocytes (the cells which cause skin pigmentation) by variations in female sex hormone levels. Although melasma can affect anyone, its prevalence is much higher in females. Melasma is often triggered by conditions which result in a fluctuation in female sex hormones such as pregnancy, being on HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) or oral contraceptives. Although melasma is not a dangerous condition it often causes people to feel embarrassed about their skin complexion and can undermine self confidence.
How does fraxel laser work?

Fraxel laser is a new skin treatment laser which has been recently approved by the FDA. Fraxel laser promotes the skins own natural healing process by triggering the body's own natural production of new collagen and skin cells. The laser has been approved by the FDA to treat a range of conditions including melasma, acne scars, age spots and facial wrinkles.

How does the fraxel laser treat melasma?

Fraxel laser helps erase excessive pigmentation by producing thousands of tiny columns deep in the skin known as microscopic treatment zones which eliminate old epidermal pigment cells. The reduction in pigment cells results in a reduction in the appearance of the brown patches of melasma.

How many fraxel laser sessions are required to treat melasma?

Although each session will have an effect on the melasma, studies show that on average an effective regime consists of four sessions of fraxel laser treatment, with each session being spaced out 2 to 4 weeks apart. Optimal improvement is usually visible in about 2 to 3 months.

Does fraxel laser treatment have any side effects?

Swelling and redness are the most common side effects of fraxel laser treatment. Swelling also occurs in some instances but it usually resolves with 48 hours. Skin redness also usually resolves within a few days. The risk of infection and scarring are low with fraxel laser treatment.

fraxel laser treatment ..on a small, light scratch-like dented scar?
does it work? anyone tried this for scars but not acne related scars?? and how much did the whole thing cost ?pls help
    thank you!

    • ANSWER:
The Micro Fractional CO2 laser has significantly less down time than the traditional CO2 laser. The traditional CO2 laser removes the top layer (or resurfaces) 100% of the skin to being treated, which results in a longer healing time and can cause long-term redness (up to 3 months). The Micro Fractional laser means that only a fraction of the skin is treated. Since bridges of healthy skin are left in between the treated areas, the downtime is significantly less. Micro Fractional does not mean fractional results. The science behind this technology allows for significant improvements comparable to traditional CO2 laser.

  7. QUESTION:
Should I do the Fraxel Laser for Acne Scars?
I have "ice pick" scars on my cheeks and just had a terrible bout of acne on my forehead so i have some fresh ice pick scars on my forehead. I have heard of some new laser called the "fraxel". How much does it cost? Can lasers even help ice-picks?

Also, can micodermabrasion help at all with acne scars? What about a "diamond" treatment of some kind...I a glanced at a brochure on it at my derm office.

    • ANSWER:
I've got alot of acne scars - ice pick and pigmentation. I've had 2 Fraxel treatments, and I can see a difference. I'm scheduled for a third, more intense treatment. Hopefully, this will be my last! :)

  8. QUESTION:
Who has had successful treatment for mild acne and acne scarring?
I've had acne since I was 12. It got really, really bad when I was 16-18, now I'm 22 and I have mild to moderate acne. But that "bad" phase left me with scarring. Not god-awful, but definately noticeable. I've done literally almost every prescription and over-the-counter product out there. Proactiv was what got me out of the "bad" phase so I still use that, but I've tried tetra and doxy to no avail (was on doxy for 2 years!), retin A, Tazorac, Clen, etc. I've also had chemical peels. Nothing seems to change my acne condition, so I want to addres something that seems more likely to change - the scarring. Like I said, it's not horrible like those pics you see on Google, just noticeable. So I've looked at fraxel, CO2, those lasers, and my concern is that people either loved it or had horror-movie results. Also, they say your acne should be "under control". What does that mean?

So basically, I want to hear from people who have successfully used laser treatments for mild scarring, how many treatments it took, and how much it cost? And did you have active acne when you went it? How was it after?
Added details: I was on an accutane series already, it didn't work for me. And the scars aren't colored at all, they're just dimples in the skin (and a few icepicks), so the skin is obviously not even and smooth. Like I said, I'm 22 now so I've had these scars for years, they haven't faded in the slightest.

  9. QUESTION:
Fraxel Laser Treatment? Acne Scar Removal.....??
have you or anyone you know had this procedure done? Were you/they satisfied with the outcome? what do you know about it and how much does it usually cost. Before and after pictures would be greatly appreciated. Thanks..

    • ANSWER:
I have never had it done before, but since I want to be a dermatologists when I grow up I've read a bit about it. I think it can be pretty spendy, but I haven't heard of anyone being unsatisfied with it. The lazer works really well, I don't have any before or after pictures, but I noticed that the patients had a really large improvment. I have heard it may sting a little, but not too bad. I've heard alot of good things about it. If you are still really hesitant about doing a lzer treatment then maybe talk to them about microdermabrasion. although for acne scares the fraxel lazer is probabaly best.
