Effects Of Smoking On Your Surgery

Surgery is complicated enough without all the side effects. Typically there are pages of consent forms to sign listing everything that could go wrong. Surgery, whether elective or required is something many will face at some point in their lives. Patients should understand many complications can not be foreseen. However there is one complication that can be avoided and it is in the patient's control and that is smoking.

Certain protocols are in place to help insure the patient's safety during surgery. Some of the more common protocols are no food or water twelve hours before and take a shower to minimize the risk of infection. For smokers there is another requirement, no smoking at least two weeks before and two weeks after. Some surgeons may even ask the patient for as long as four weeks before and after the surgery.

Anesthesiologyinfo.com explains some of the serious side effects smoking can have on the body during surgery. The heart will not function properly because smoking increases carbon monoxide causing the blood to not properly circulate. Carbon monoxide will also attach itself to hemoglobin in the blood which will decrease the amount of oxygen flowing through the blood and body. Nicotine makes the body need more oxygen which will put more stress on the heart, lungs and body which is already under distress from the anesthesia.

The lungs also prone to collapse because the small airways do not function as they should because of smoke and nicotine. Smoking causes more mucus production and the lungs are not able to clear it as quickly as they should, making the patient more prone to serious lung infections such as pneumonia and chronic coughing. Bronchospsams and other infections in the lungs can be fatal and should be taken seriously. Smoking has been linked to dozens of other side effects, ranging from heart attacks to poor wound healing by as many as six times more in smokers versus non smokers.

Leading a healthier life and having a successful surgery is something all doctors wish for their patients. Doctors do not want their patient to have complications before, during or after surgery. This is why they ask for smokers to at least take a break before going under any anesthesia. Making smoking secession a top priority is something all patients should be doing, regardless if they are having surgery or not.

There are many ways for patients to quit smoking. Some of the more common treatments are over the counter, such as the nicotine patch and gum. There are other homeopathic treatments as well such as herbal remedies, acupuncture and hypnosis. While others choose to quit, by using prescriptions such as Zyban and Wellbutrin. Often treatments are combined so the patient is as successful as they can be.

The most important thing is to discuss with your physician to discuss your options and find out which plan will suit you best. There are many choices and options available to help you quit, the time is now. Do not wait until you need major surgery before trying to quit, quit before you get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How does quitting smoking effect your heart?
I've recently (about a month) quit smoking, and my PA suggested I see a heart specialist because my numbers didn't look right, so I did, and he says she must have got a bad reading, so do you think quitting smoking may have had an effect on the reading?

    • ANSWER:
Your answer doesn't give details about what kind of tests you had done, but I can tell you that one of the biggest risks of smoking is atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Atherosclerosis, in turn, causes a plethora of health problems in almost all body systems (ie. diabetes, heart attack, renal failure, stroke, etc etc!)

As I said before, I don't know what type of tests your doctors performed, so I'll bet that atherosclerosis is one of your problems, but I can't give much more speculation than that.

Congratulations on quitting smoking, as this will dramatically improve your health (the longer you go without smoking, the greater your benefits will be).

    • ANSWER:
I don't really think that the marijuana has any true affect on the body. The only harmfull affect is how you take the drug. Smoking is the most hazardous way. You should buy a vaporizor. They are pretty cheap and eliminate any of the hazards associated with the smoke in your lungs.

  5. QUESTION:
Does smoking have an effect on your heart?
I am 17 years old and I have PVcs. That means my heart skips beats. I am wondering if it is still ok if i smoked marijuana. I am not talking about cigarettes. Those are bad. But please be honest. I dont want a false answer just becasue people are against it.

  6. QUESTION:
Need a conclusion to a persuasive essay on the effects of smoking? Talked about lung, heart, second hand smoke?

    • ANSWER:
In conclusion, I'd like to say that Chronic Bronchitis, asthma Emphysema, heart disease, are not only crippling to the person that suffer from them but their families suffer too. As does society because these individuals are taken out of the job market and while their body's can't function their brains are generally unaffected. What a waste! The numbers of these sufferers rises every year. And with air pollution on the rise and global warming with climate change the future looks bleak. The one effective treatment for this problem is a n all out campaign to stamp out smoking. Especially in children in their formative years, They are spending billions to stamp out illegal drugswhich of course, is a major problem but not one penny to eradicate a totally preventable affliction on our society. And the tobacco companies spend millions every year to lure the kids in. You say "what can I do?". Support legislation to limit smoking. Increase taxes, make it too expensive. Tell your politcal leaders that you are tired of this and ask what you can do about it.

  7. QUESTION:
describing the effect of smoking on heart rate?

    • ANSWER:
On average, tobacco increases your heart rate 10 to 20 beats per minute, and it increases your blood pressure reading by 5 to 10 mmHg (because it constricts the blood vessels).
The inhaled substances trigger chemical reactions in nerve endings. The cholinergic receptors are often triggered by the naturally occurring substance acetylcholine. Acetylcholine and Nicotine express chemical similarities, which allows Nicotine to tigger the receptor as well. These nicotinic acetylcholine receptors takes part in two major types of neurotransmission, synaptic transmission and paracrine signalling. This activity increases heart rate, memory, alertness, and produces a measurably faster reaction time after subjects have smoked.
THE BENEFITS OF QUITTING CIGARETTE SMOKING:-
      * Within 20 minutes of quitting - your blood pressure and pulse rate drop to normal and the temperature of your hands and feet increases to normal.

  8. QUESTION:
Effect of smoking on the heart?
Whats the effect of smoking on the heart? 6 mark answer?

    • ANSWER:
Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 different chemicals. At least 43 are known carcinogens (cause cancer in humans).

Smoking has hazardous effects on the heart. Following are the effects of smoking on heart:

Atherosclerosis: Smoking leads to ‘atherosclerosis’. In atherosclerosis the arteries get thickened and hardened due to the deposit of fatty substances, called plaques and cholesterol. This makes the arteries narrower and restricts the flow of the blood to the heart. Smoking, by increasing the build up of the plaques and cholesterol due to the presence of poisons and toxins in the blood, accelerates the process of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis finally causes coronary heart disease, stroke, and artery diseases.

Heart attack: Smoking leads to inadequate blood supply due to the effects of carbon monoxide discharged from tobacco smoke. Because the body needs adequate supply of oxygen, the heart needs to work faster. This leads to stress on the heart which eventually causes angina or a sudden heart attack.

Angina: Smoking interrupts the blood supply to the heart. This process is called angina. The symptom of angina, which does not cause death, includes a tightness and pain of the chest.

Heart failure: Smoking increases high blood pressure because the nicotine in tobacco elevates the blood pressure. High blood pressure may cause a heart failure.

Stroke: Smokers are at a greater risk of suffering from a stroke. Stroke can occur either when there is a lack of supply of blood and oxygen to the brain or if an artery ruptures and blood escapes into the brain.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: Smoking tobacco causes a bulge in the wall of the aorta near the stomach, called ‘abdominal aortic aneurysm’.

Smoking reduces peoples’ tolerance to exercise, which makes their heart weak. So it indirectly affects the heart.

Smoking increases the levels of fibrinogen. Fibrinogen is a protein that causes the blood to clot. So the tendency for the blood to clot increases due to smoking.

  9. QUESTION:
    smoking and the heart?
Smoking is bad for your heart .. we all know this. If we quit smoking and use the patch to help us, does Nicoderm patch have the same effect on the heart?

    • ANSWER:
I believe it can, I quit in Jan.06 and had a heart attack in Feb.06 . I used the patch to quit with on a daily basis, so be careful, nicotine is nicotine any way you get it and can cause cause harm!!!!

  10. QUESTION:
What are the bad side effects of smoking cigarettes?
i'm 26--female and i started to smoke cigarettes. i can quit if i want but since i have 6 packs i want to smoke them or if i find someone who is interested to buy them then i'll sell them, these cigarettes are famous because they cam from Middle East.
But every time i smoke, i notice my heart beating fast and i notice some pain on my heart.
    What should i do?

    • ANSWER:
Quit right now. The longer you smoke the larger the chance that you will get addicted, and once you get addicted, you may never be able to quit. I know people who have smoked for decades and tried to quit dozens times, but have not been able to. So quit while you can. Several decades of addiction isn't worth the price of a few packs of cigarettes.

Your heart probably beats fast because nicotine mimicks the action of the neurotransmitter that controls the speed of your heart beating. I don't know if this can be dangerous from just a few cigarettes, but addiction is definitely a risk that's not worth taking.

The biggest long-term health effects of smoking are a hugely increased cancer risk (I used to work for a lung cancer doctor who said he had never had a patient who never smoked), high blood pressure, heart disease, and emphysema. It's seriously not worth risking a life-long addiction and possibly fatal illnesses just to avoid wasting a few packs of cigarettes.

  11. QUESTION:
    Smoking and birth control risks?
I know that smoking while on the pill can increase risks of heart attack and dramatically effect heart health in older women, but what about in someone who's 15 or 16 years old?
i assume the risks are still there, but how risky is it exactly?
well the only reason to continue to smoke would be that it is a pretty bad addiction, and i'm too poor to afford nicotine patches or gum. I suppose cold turkey might be in order (again) if it's really that big of a deal, but i'm just trying to see if i'm going to die or not.

    • ANSWER:
THERE IS RISK FOR ALL AGES BUT HIGHER RISK AFTER 35 - see section FAQ

  12. QUESTION:
Does smoking marijuana have the same effects as smoking cigarettes while on birth control?
I'm using a NuvaRing. I know that smoking cigarettes while on birth control would lead to bad heart problems, but does weed do the same?

...If you're going to preach, go waste your time elsewhere.

    • ANSWER:
I don't see a need to preach unless you get pregnant.

A little bit of googling doesn't show anything. Best to ask a doctor. I always phrase my doctor questions such as "What would happen if I were to do X while I'm on Y?" It deflects any potential judgment and just gets to the heart of the issue.

  15. QUESTION:
How does smoking causes emphysema. Can or cannot emphysema can be cured.?
Discuss the effects of smoking and emphysema on the heart.

How do people with emphysema die.

    • ANSWER:
Emphysema is abnormal and permanent enlargement of the small airspaces of the lungs, the alveoli and the bronchioles (tiny lung sacs). There is also damage and destruction of the walls of these lung sacs.

      It can not be cured.

Air gets into your lungs carrying oxygen but this oxygen cannot get into your blood enough because the amount of blood/air interface (where the oxygen gets into your blood) is smaller because the little air sacs have been destroyed and there is less lung surface for the blood to flow to to uptake the oxygen.

The heart does not receive the amount of oxygen from the lungs in the bloodstream that it (the heart) needs so it has to work much harder to pump the available oxygen rich blood around. The heart gets enlarged and tired from having to work harder, therefore it gets less effective in it's pumping mechanism.

There are a few complications (other health problems that emphysema causes) that might lead to falling deadly ill:

-polycytemia (abnormally high amount of red blood cells causing sluggish blood flow and an increased risk of clotting).

      - Right heart failure.

      - Pneumothorax (escape of air from the lung into the pleural
      cavity).

      - Respiratory failure- often caused by acute infections of the lungs.

Most people with emphysema die because of extreme breathlessness which can result in a respiratory arrest which can cause the heart to stop working.

Nervous about serious side effects from birth control?
I'm starting the Nuva Ring tomorrow and I have to admit I'm super nervous. I was on the pill when my husband and I first got married 4 years ago but went off of it only after 9 months. We got pregnant quickly and had my first son. When he was just under a year old we conceived my youngest son who is now 8 months old. So this is the first thing I've been on and I"m so scared. I'm mainly scared about those major side effects (heart attack, stroke, blood clots, TSS etc.) how common are those? Should I not use it if I'm this nervous? Someone help calm my fears. If it helps I'm 25 and I don't smoke nore have I ever.

    • ANSWER:
They're very rare, you will probably be fine. It's more risky to get in a car! But if you really are worried then use another form of birth control. No point in using something if it stresses out your life.

  20. QUESTION:
    Smoking and Coronary heart disease.?
explain in depth please the relationship between smoking and coronary heart disease.

eg,,explain the affects it has on the heart and all organs surrounding it.

    What bad effects can occur

    • ANSWER:
Smoking causes your blood vessels to constrict, resulting in an increase in blood pressure. As well, cigarette smoke contains many chemicals in it, including carbon monoxide. When there is an increase in carbon monoxide in your blood vessels, there is less oxygen, so your heart has to work harder. As well, smoking accelerates growth of plaque deposits in your arteries, which makes them narrowed and more susceptible to coronary artery disease (angina and heart attack).

  24. QUESTION:
What is the Effect of Marijuana Use on Heart Transplant Recipients?
I am under the impression that any smoking and any herbal supplements can be detrimental to the health of a recovering heart transplant recipient, both because of chemical shocks to the new heart and also because of possible complications with medications being taken. What effects can marijuana use have on a recipient (taken post-discharge from hospital after receiving the heart)?

    • ANSWER:
As per the National Institute on Drug Abuse, a study has indicated that an abuser's risk of heart attack more than quadruples in the first hour after smoking marijuana. The researchers suggest that such an effect might occur from marijuana's effects on blood pressure and heart rate and reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of blood.

Within a few minutes after inhaling marijuana smoke, an individual's heart begins beating more rapidly, the bronchial passages relax and become enlarged, and blood vessels in the eyes expand, making the eyes look red. The heart rate, normally 70 to 80 beats per minute, may increase by 20 to 50 beats per minute or, in some cases, even double. This effect can be greater if other drugs are taken with marijuana.

Some adverse health effects caused by marijuana may occur because THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) impairs the immune system's ability to fight off infectious diseases and cancer. In laboratory experiments that exposed animal and human cells to THC or other marijuana ingredients, the normal disease-preventing reactions of many of the key types of immune cells were inhibited. In other studies, mice exposed to THC or related substances were more likely than unexposed mice to develop bacterial infections and tumors.

Based on these facts, it is easy to conclude that if marijuana use causes these adverse effects in normal healthy humans, it will cause equal amount of harm (if not more) in heart transplant patients.

For a heart transplant patient, any stress on the heart is ill-advised. In addition, a transplant patient needs to take immunosuppressants. Marijuana impairs the immune system's ability to fight off infectious diseases and cancer. Hence the chances of infection and/ or cancer increases with marijuana use in case of transplant patients.

As per the Publication of Drug Watch Oregon, Volume 3, No. 4, January 1997, a 48 year old successful kidney transplant patient who heavily used marijuana immediately following his transplant developed invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA), a fungus transmitted in the smoke of marijuana. Marks et al reported on their use of an experimental antifungal drug to effectively treat this life threatening condition (Transplantation, Vol. 61, 1771-1773, No. 12, June 27, 1996), and noted that IPA "is a devastating complication in the immuno-compromised patient" such as patients with AIDS, chronic granulomatous disease, bone marrow transplants and those receiving chemotherapy for small cell lung cancer. Aspergillosis has up to a 90% fatality rate if contracted by transplant patients.

In my case, my transplant clinic has strictly recommended that I should not smoke, drink or do drugs after my transplant. (I never smoked, drank or did drugs in my life - Thank God!). The reason being that these interfere with the immunosuppressants and cause more harm in transplant patients than in normal people.

In my opinion, the priority of a heart transplant patient is taking care of the new heart and not smoking marijuana. If pain is a problem, the patient should contact his transplant clinic and get a prescription for pain medication.

Have you seen the actors on TV who smoke and you think it looks cool. But the fact is that it is a waste of money the chemicals in the cigarettes are really bad for you and no one wants to be around someone who smokes.

Smoking has a massive effect on health, smoking causes 5000 deaths in New Zealand each year. 1.3 billion people smoke in the world.
Smoking causes 1 in 4 cancer deaths in New Zealand including cancers in the lung, mouth and throat which is where the smokes goes.
When you breath smoke, the smoke goes into your lungs and stars putting black tar into your lungs. This means it is harder to breath and your heart has to pump harder to et the oxygen around your body. That is bad for your heart.

Smoking is so dangerous why don't people stop?
Stopping is more difficult than starting. Nicotine is addictive this means that the nicotine in the cigarettes makes you want more and more and you can't stop you keep wanting cigarettes. So you keep on buying more smokes and waste a lot of money
Suppose everyday you smoke one packet of cigarettes which cost about then you will be wasting per week and it will add up to 96 per year.

Even people who don't smoke may be killed by other people's smoking. Around 350 New Zealanders are killed by other people tobacco smoke each year so it isn't a good idea to hang out with smokers. If you smoke cigarettes you will smell of tobacco smoke and your friends won't want to hang out with you because of the smell. As well as the smell

So I have talked about the effects on smoking and the waste of money it is and why people won't want to hang out with you because you smoke
So why would you start to smoke.
what else could i write in my speech

    • ANSWER:

  27. QUESTION:
    Smoking speech help too short?
this is my speech it is not long enough but need to be 3 minutes please help m,e

    • ANSWER:
It's kind of choppy, especially in the beginning.
You can elaborate more on the adverse effects of smoking: emphysema, mouth, throat, and gum cancer, smoker's cough, etc
I am guessing you are speaking to teenagers so you can mention that smoking companies' advertisements specifically target teens. If a person doesn't isn't addicted to cigarettes by the age of 18, then there's a 99% chance they never will be. That's why they have to target them so they will become lifelong customers.
Second hand smoking may be even worse than first hand smoking because a person breathe out more carcinogens than they inhale. There's also something called third hand smoking where you can be affected by being in a room that has been used for smoking a lot and a smoker's clothing.

  28. QUESTION:
What are the real effects of smoking marijuana both long term and short term?
I am 16 years old and many of my friends smoke marijuana. I have been offered the drug several times and I must admit I wanted it every time but did not accept. The reason is not becase I want to fit in or anything social like that. The reason has to do with my own anxiety. I have a diagnosed issue with anxiety and depression and I have heard that marijuana has helped many people like me. I'm not stupid though, so I would never use this sort of mind altering drug unless I know everything it does and that could happen. I'm really tired of looking online and finding only sensles rantings by pot heads who say it's "cool..." and extremists who say tha marijuana burns your soul. What is real??? Below are some examples of the thing I want to know about. If you have any piece of what I'm asking then please tell me what you know even if all your knoledge is based on personal experience. I want to see some actuall medical studies by respectable institutes with real citations (that means links).
-effects on lungs (keep in mind that I've never smoked)
    -mental effects
    -long term brain effects
    -short term brain effects
    -effects teeth and mouth tissue
-bad weed (laced or mold or other) Vs. good weed and how to tell the difference
    -heart/blood issues?
-lentgh of short term mental effects
    -addiction causing? dependancy causing?
-worse or better ways of smoking? (rolling paper, pipe, etc...)
-effects on youth (specifically someone my age- 16)
    -conflicts with other drugs?
-How much weed does it take to get high? Can you smoke to much at once?
-What is THC and what does it do?

    • ANSWER:
Ill answer all your questions based off the information I have gathered myself.

First I would like to start off by saying I also have social anxiety and a bit of depression. While high you will feel like all is well and you will become more social and all your problems melted away. However when off the drug you will feel the same as you always did. Use the drug in moderation and as a way to put yourself out there and into social situations. You will eventually become more comfortable and you will be able to communicate with others off the drug. (all this is based off my personal experience, the effects are different for everyone). Now onto your questions

Effects on lungs- To be perfectly honest its terrible for your lungs. Your putting carcinogens (smoke) where it doesn't belong. The occasional smoke is not going to chop your life in half but I cant imagine its good for you. However I have read studies where THC can actually kill cancerous cells, so the smoke is going to pollute your lungs but your not going get cancer from it, just black lungs. If your concerned about it use a vaporizer or bake some goodies.

mental effects- It makes you feel GREAT. However when I first started I did get some panic attacks because I was not 100% comfortable with what I was doing. After some research and some more experience I haven't had one since.

long term brain effects- Again, different for everyone. The stereotype is that long term pot smokers are lazy people who cant hold a job. Wrong, there are plenty of smart people with respectable jobs who smoke cannabis. Analysis your personality and make sure you wont become psychologically addicted to it. Other then that you probably wont lose IQ points every time you light up.

Short term- There are two different types of marijuana. Salvia and Indica. Salvia gives you a head rush where you are extremely creative and very outgoing. Indica gives you a couch lock where you have a extreme "body" high where your senses are increased and you become less likely to want to do things. However once you start doing them you don't want to stop. When coming down from a high I usually get pretty tired and usually go to sleep shortly after.

Teeth + mouth- Smoke = yellow teeth, again a vaporizer or baked food will solve that problem. As for the mouth I am not quite sure what you mean. Taste wise its personal preference, personally I love it. Health wise it's probably not good for your gums. This is similar to the lung issue though.

"bad" weed- You can usually tell if something is laced because your dealer will charge you more for it. However some dealers will actually spray the weed with RAID or other harmful chemicals to increase the weight, therefore you pay more for less pot. Just don't buy from shady dealers. But if you do get some shady weed, usually the smell will give away if it was sprayed or not. If you see any weird particles in the pot then don't smoke it. Do some research to tell the difference between THC and unwanted substances. Onto the mold issue, In the curing process of the plant the weed is hanged to dry so it is ready for consumption, mold might grow on it during this process. You can usually spot the mold just by looking at the pot, once again don't mistake THC with mold. (THC is crystal looking things). Google for pictures of moldy weed. Also store your pot in a air tight container to prevent it from spoiling.

Heart/blood- Your veins expand which is why you get red eyes. Your eyes become red because the blood vessels in your body widen. Your heart rate will increase but no more then if you were to run up and down a flight of stairs a few times. If you are in shape and do not have any past experiences with heart problems you wont have a problem in this area.

Duration of short term mental effects- Until your high is gone. Once the 2-3 hours pass you will be back to your normal self.

Addiction- Once again its your personality. Just determine for yourself whether or not you think you will become addicted. My first or second paragraph gives my personal experiences.

Worse/better smoking techniques- When rolling NEVER EVER use printer paper or anything like that. These were not made for the purpose of smoking, the whitening chemicals in this paper are terrible for you. Use paper that is designed for smoking, you can pick some up at 7/11's and such. You can also use bible paper if there is no ink on the pages, just don't make a habit of it. Pipes are clean and easy to use, all you get is the plant material. Vaporizers are the cleanest and best way of smoking. It heats up the pot to a good temperature to release just the THC in a vapor. Thus no smoke, all you get is a fine clean mist which will knock you on your ass =P.

Youth- It wont change your physical appearance... we arn't talking about meth here xD.

Conflicts with other drugs- Do some research with which drugs you plan on ingesting with weed. Never take a heart rate decreasing dru

  29. QUESTION:
What effect does smoking weed have on you ?

  30. QUESTION:
Rapid heart rate and spice? Does it effect MJ?
My boyfriend was on P.O. For about a year and all we smoked was spice. I had no problems or symptoms from it up until recently. I took one bong rip about a week ago and my heart was beating over 200bpm and it lasted for 30 minutes (As long as the high). Ive never honestly had this happen to me before from smoking the substance. Then three days ago i tried to take another rip and 5 minutes into the high i feel my heart jumping out of my chest. I feel as if it gets worse each time. Im afraid to smoke marijuana now, Because what if it induces the same effects onto my heart? Ive never EVER had these issues before. Im just scared of having a heart attack. Would anyone assume it would be safe to smoke MJ after this spice effect? Or would it make my heart rapidly beat again?

    • ANSWER:
Been there, it all happened the same way it happened with you. You consumed to much of the pure substance which is active in spice which is a research chemical. It sucks and can give you an anxiety or panic attack. You need to stay from it even if your being tested because their have been reports of severe side effects such as seizures and brain swelling. Also smoking from a bong is a bad idea because you are getting a concentrated effect of the research chemical. Back to what I was saying, this stuff just triggered an anxiety attack, even if it gave you a panic disorder which it had done with me the only thing you can do is avoid ALL substances and wait until you feel STABLE. Don't freak out about "permanent damage" and "heart damage" because if you had either of those you would be in pain. Most people that I know went through what you had and recovered to 100% and could do mj again but you need to feel STABLE. Give it a few weeks or maybe even a few months but whatever suits you, otherwise you will exacerbate what you are feeling right now.

      Best of Luck

  31. QUESTION:
    2 questions about smoking??
Curious... wonder if someone can answer...

1~ What effects does smoking have on your heart? Does it speed up your heart beat? Does it make your heart pump harder?

2~ What are the stages and symptoms your body goes through when you quit smoking? Is fatigue one of them?

Thanks for any answers or suggestions of where to find answers... Just trying to figure out answers for someone close to me... Thanks ♥

    • ANSWER:
      1. Nicotine is a stimulant, so smoking cigarettes will speed up your heart rate and make your heart work harder. The reason people feel that cigarettes relax them is that cigarettes are addictive. When you feed an addiction, this relieves the tension of not getting the substance that your body craves. People perceive this sensation as "relaxation," but this is just an illusion.

      2. Fatigue is not usually a withdrawal symptom, but irritability and nervousness are. These symptoms will go away eventually, within a few days or a few weeks at most. After quitting, most people find that they actually have more energy.

OR, if he still wants to take CHANTIX, how can he avoid the stomach pain.??????HELP,..Thank You.

    • ANSWER:
When I don't smoke for a long time I start to get indigestion. Nicotine is a bit strange in that it causes temporary paralazyis of the tissues around which absorbtion occurs. Some people see a sudden increase in apetite upon stopping oral nicotine sources, and some, such as myself, get severe indegestion. The best cure for my indigestion was continuously eating things, thereby keeping the stomache from fully contracting (having something to contract on to and mix). Understanding that many people either can't stand to eat that much, or don't have a lifestyle to support it either due to time consideration or weight control, low calorie snacks can be good such as celery (also high in fiber), rice cakes, popcorn (non buttered), etc can help considerably. Over time, the stomache pain will go away ad his body gets used to not having nicotine. Prilosec should be nonreactive with Chantix, however to be sure I would ask a doctor or pharmisist.

  38. QUESTION:
    strange effects of smoking pot?
okay so i recently smoked pot for the second time, and the effects were relatively the same as last time, which was over a year ago. after taking a few passes about 1-2 hits each time i started to feel strange. the first time it came on slowly but this time it happened suddenly. everything started pulsating, moving forward and backward, and my body felt like i was doing the same. my extremities tingle (and also my groin). I began to experience derealization. one minute i would be in reality, and not even two second later i would be in another personal reality. in my personal reality i thought about everything deeper and more intense, which i didn't mind, but as i entered into this alternate reality i began to get scared because of the tingling and stuff and my heart begins to feel like i had smoked a carton of menthol cigarettes. this scares the piss out of me because i take medication, adderal for add/adhd and antidepressants. because of this i end up trying to fight entering into this "bad place" and to do this it seems that if i start moving somehow, no matter how little (first time it was patting my chest which i guess was my conscience telling me in my sub-conscience state that my chest hurt [oh yeah i also ran in place], this past time i "ran" but the only part on my body moving was my feet, but just barely) that it allows me to hold onto this reality but also access the other reality, but if i linger in the other reality to long i start feeling like last time. oh yeah when i start feeling like that i begin to think that it could possibly kill me, which makes me question my religious beliefs (or lack there of) , which makes me question EVERYTHING!!!! I honestly don't know what happened i am pretty sure that the pot was not laced. If anyone is able to help please do, because this is so strange and i want to know if it is normal or has happened to anyone else or what i can do to avoid it in the future.
yes i have got the munchies. the first time real bad i ate 3 HUGE bowls of cereal. the past time was not to bad. but also when i got high both times it was around people that i don't completely trust. like there are acquaintances, friends, and best friends, and i would say that they are more of the acquaintance type. one thing that scared me this past time was being stuck there with those people. i felt like i had a hightened sense of awareness of character and stuff and although they did not actually look like the boogieman in my mind they kind of were because of just there general demeanor and stuff. Also i realized that i become extremely honest to myself and others and that kind of scares me because what if i tell them something that i did not want to know of just tell them that in reality there life is completely worthless or something. But like the whole hightened sense of awareness crap came after i had eaten something and was starting to come off the "bad place" high. this past

  39. QUESTION:
How unhealthy is smoking one or two cigarettes a day?
Now I know there is plenty of well-documented research regarding the adverse health effects that smoking can contribute to (heart disease, cancer, etc.), but I think most research has focused on rather heavy long-term smokers, those who smoke somewhere around 10, 20, or more cigarettes per day. I don't recall I've ever read a study concerning relatively very light smoking (for example, less than 10 cigarettes a week).

An analogy that comes to mind that may or may not be valid is red wine. Obviously, drinking a gallon of red wine a day would be harmful to your health. But most experts agree that a glass or two of wine a day won't kill you. So what I'm wondering is, is it similar for smoking, where smoking a light amount won't really hurt you that much? Or is ANY smoking, no matter how minimal, likely to cause health problems?

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
That's not even considered smoking. Try 30 a day. Then we'll talk.

  40. QUESTION:
What are the possible effects of smoking for only 2 years and then quitting?
I started smoking 2 years ago and decided to stop for good today. I never even want to look at another pack of smokes ever again!!! I smoked about 1 pack ever 2 days and every once in a while I would go 2 or 3 days or sometimes even a week without touching one then start up again. I started to notice within the last week that after smoking I felt tired and my chest / lungs felt a little heavy while breathing, but after a little while it would go away and I would be back to normal until I smoked again. So pretty much my question is... if I stop smoking now after only 2 years will my body be able to heal itself from the damage I have done to it AND is smoking for 2 years long enough to have caused any health problems like heart disease or lung problems? I know I'm really asking 2 questions but I really need someone who knows what their talking about to help me on this one. I tried searching but can't find anything specific on the effects of smoking for only 2 years.

    • ANSWER:
You will be fine. Your alveoli are not permanently damaged. Permanently damaged alveoli is a condition known as emphysema. So long as you don't have emphysema (not at all likely) or lung cancer you will be right back to normal very quickly.

BTW, both posters ahead of me are right on. The big risk is that you'll start back.

  41. QUESTION:
smoking pot on the sacred heart soup dt?
So I started the Sacred Heart Soup thing today where you make the vegetable soup and for 7 days you eat the soup and like one other thing each day. For instance, today I got the soup and fruit, tomorrow is soup and veggies, stuff like that. You're not allowed to have anything sweetened, soda, alcohol, or anything but tonight i went to a party and smoked… does that effect the system or count as cheating?
I don't mean affect the system as in your body, i meant affect the system as in the soup/only eating like 500 calories a day system. As in, since it's not any calories, how could it affect how much weight you lose?
i rarely ever smoke! and that's not exactly answering the question

    • ANSWER:
Don't you think it's kind of contradictory that you're on a health trip/diet (which is all about losing weight and being healthy) yet you're smoking pot?

Yes I'd consider it cheating. Don't mean to be a nark or a troll , but you may aswell just stop the diet you're on if you're gonna do drugs . Ew.

On a serious note though, yes it does effect the system. I am surprised you even had to ask that.

Heres just the tip of the adverse effects of smoking pot :

"Scientists believe that marijuana can be especially harmful to the lungs because users often inhale the unfiltered smoke deeply and hold it in their lungs as long as possible. Therefore, the smoke is in contact with lung tissues for long periods of time, which irritates the lungs and damages the way they work. Marijuana smoke contains some of the same ingredients in tobacco smoke that can cause emphysema and cancer. In addition, many marijuana users also smoke cigarettes; the combined effects of smoking these two substances creates an increased health risk."

  42. QUESTION:
    The effects on smoking weed?
Im trying to figure out all the symptoms of smoking weed because i feel as tho my effects to them are not normal. I smoke like once in a blue moon and when I do smoke it makes me feel weird. Like evrytime im around a bunch of males that i can normal trust even males in my family and i smoke i feel like they are going to try and rape me and i get this sudden panic attacks. My heart always race and i just feel like im brain dead i cant talk to no one nor hold a normal conversation without feeling to lazy to talk and sometimes i cant feel my face nor body part it seems like everything numb. Can someone tell me if those are normal side effects of weed and also all the symptoms of getting high????

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
Yea dude. Those "symptoms" sound normal.

Since you dont smoke often, you probably get real close to stoned. It would probably be a good idea for you to smoke in a more relaxed atmosphere, if possible. I dont know how you get weed but I would suggest hiking up a large hill / small mountain so you can be completely isolated.

Just try isolating yourself once and experiencing the effects, and THEN be around people. It will be easier cause you know what to expect.

  48. QUESTION:
How damaging to one's health is very light smoking?
I'm curious about this and wondering if anyone might know of information regarding such a matter.

Each day when I come home from work I like to go out on my balcony and smoke a cigarette. I've been doing this for about six years. When I was younger, in university and such I would often smoke more but I cut it down and now for these last years I have been in this routine, never smoking more. People always say to me that it starts out like that but you can't keep it at such a level, but that hasn't been true. For such a long time I've kept it at the 1/day level and I never feel the need nor even desire to have any more than that one cigarette each day. Often times on the weekends if I'm doing something I skip it altogether.

How likely is such light smoking to lead to the kinds of health effects that are common to smokers such as cancer, heart disease, respiratory problems etc.?

    • ANSWER:
You'll be fine. The vast majority of illness caused by smoking applies to those who smoke a pack a day or more. There is a specific percentage, but if you're under a pack a day, the chances are you'll be okay. At only one smoke a day, I'm sure you've got nothing to worry about.

You're very lucky, by the way, that you can only smoke one a day. Most people can't without getting hooked and chain smoking. I sure can't smoke just one a day. You are VERY luck in this respect.

I just want to know what some of you all think is the best pill to take. (with the least amount of side effects/heart attack, stroke? (none of these things run in my family, and I do not smoke)

    • ANSWER:

  50. QUESTION:
I smoked k2/diablo, possible heart attack.!?
About a week ago I was smoking on a k2 substance called diablo, the most potent of its kind. I started hallucinate , or trip. My heart was beating very rapidly, so I drank some room temperature water. After shaking, and sweating, the nausea, and vomiting, neck and upper chest spasms, and extremely rapid heart beats, to the extent to where I could see it through my chest, i was sure I had just experienced a heart attack, although I did not call an ambulance. About an hour after smoking , the effects of it started to fade, even though I was still triipping, I was a few miles to a friends, by then it was done, and over. Now, my heart beats very slow, and fast a random moments, and my heart tends to hurt towards the night. I am only 14, should I go to hospital what should i do, since my heart still hurts on occurances. Please help me identify what is wrong.
