As far as women are concerned the little black number has been a saviour for many years and on many occasions. They can make it look professional for the office and classy for a night out. So how can men compete with this?

We’re not literally talking about little black dresses here of course, but there is no doubt that most men are at a real disadvantage when it comes to deciding what to wear throughout the day.

The answer may just lie in the shirts most men wear. The shirt has the same type of advantage as that little black dress does. For example you can team it up with a smart tie for the office, and strip the tie off to flaunt a more casual look for the evening. Provided the trousers you pair it with are smart enough for the office and not so smart that they don’t sit right in a more casual setting, you’ve got a potential solution on your hands.

Of course it isn’t always possible to go from the office to the bar or restaurant wearing exactly the same items all the time. Try looking at how women manage to accessorise a black dress to see how you can apply the same techniques to your own wardrobe.

For example, don’t think so much about the main item. For a woman this would be the black dress, but for you it could well be a suit. Provided you aren’t wearing a traditional office pinstripe suit, you can dress it down for the evenings by accessorising in different ways.

Take the shirt you are wearing with that suit for instance. Once the end of the day arrives you can whip off that tie and change your shirt into something more appealing for an evening out. How about a classic granddad top for example? Team one of these tops up with the right kind of suit and you’re made to enjoy a night out without having to worry about changing your suit at all.

A classic white shirt will work well too, regardless of whether it is a proper button down style or something plainer. As you can see there are plenty of options and they all serve to make a good suit more versatile.

Pay attention to your colours too. Don’t be afraid to put a whole new spin on your favourite suit by wearing a coloured shirt underneath it instead of something more staid. You may not want to stand out in the office, but it’s a different story once you start socialising during the evening.

T-shirts are the best option because they come in plenty of shapes, sizes, colours and styles. They can change a work suit into a lounge suit in minutes. Try it yourself and see how you look. Men really have got an alternative to the black dress loved by women everywhere.
