Modern Bedding- A Glossary Of Terms Like Down Alternative Comforter, Duvet Cover, Threadcount, Egyptian Cotton Sheets

Author: Gabrielle Yurgil

Ever wondered what a thread count is? How about a baffle box? Or what is the difference between Egyptian cotton and regular cotton? Buying a bedding collection today doesn’t have to be confusing. Here is a glossary of comforter and bedding terms you will likely see, in no particular order. Cotton is a vegetable seed fiber that can be found growing all across the globe. The quality of the cotton is determined by the length of the fiber. Egyptian, Pima, and Supima are considered the cottons with the best quality. Egyptian cotton is the longest cotton fiber that is grown today, so it is the best you can buy. Supima and Pima come from the southwestern part of the United States, and are just a notch below Egyptian in terms of their fiber length and quality.

The thread count is probably what most will look at, but some may not know exactly what it is. It is simply the exact number of threads that are going in one direction or another in a single square inch of fabric. Polyester is a durable synthetic fiber that is manmade. Not only is it non-breathable, but is also resistant to shrinking and wrinkles. The polyester fibers are typically combined with cotton to make a blended fabric, which will make for a quality bedding collection.

A term you will likely see when shopping for bed comforters is a baffle box. These are found on the inside of better comforters. It is simply a three dimensional box that is made of a firmer fabric. Its purpose is to allow the comforter to have as much thickness as possible. The box also keeps the filling from moving around which allows for better head support and comfort. This is an important feature to look for in a bed comforter as is will help it last longer, and remain in better condition as well.

One of the more popular kinds is called a down comforter, which is filled with small feathers that grow under the breast of a goose or duck. They provide great insulation and are very soft and fluffy, ensuring you will stay warm and comfy, especially during winter. As great as a down comforter is, the quality does come at a higher price. The more pure the down feathers contained within are, the more costly it will be. There are also down alternative comforters available for those who are allergic. These comforters are filled with 100% spun polyester. You can put a beautiful duvet cover over it and no one will ever know the difference!

A binding on a bedding ensemble is just trim on the fold-down part of a pillowcase, sheet, or sham. It is merely for decorative purposes, although it can make a pillowcase feel nicer, and is also sometimes referred to as edging or piping. A duvet cover is what you put a comforter into in order to keep it protected and help keep dirt off of it. A fitted sheet is the one with the elastic on it that goes directly onto the mattress, and a flat sheet is the top sheet that lays over it. There are other bedding terms, but these are the ones people will most often see.
