Juvederm Vs. Restylane : My Lip Enhancement Experience

Dermal fillers have been getting a lot of attention lately in the world of cosmetic dermatology and anti aging. And all for a good reason. Dermal fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm can make a dramatic difference in the appearance of a person’s skin, all with minimal time, a fairly reasonable cost, and minimal invasiveness and pain.

There is little difference between the two big competitors, Juvederm and Restylane, as they are both comprised of a substance that is naturally found in the body called hyaluronic acid, which naturally diminishes as we age.

The result of collagen’s diminishment is that our skin starts to slacken, since collagen and hyaluronic acid, a component of collagen, is the plumping force under our skin that makes our skin look “filled out” and youthful.

Cosmetic dermatologists and other qualified dermal filler specialists have harnessed this “filling” power in the form of a very fine needle that injects the fillers underneath the skin so that it may fill out folds, lines and wrinkles and make them look plump again, reducing their appearance.

Not only that, but both fillers may be used to plump the lips to give them a naturally fuller look. This is the procedure I had performed, and I chose to go with Juvederm over Restylane for reasons I will explain later in this article.

Another big plus of dermal fillers is their relatively long life. Both Restylane and Juvederm typically last in the body for about 4-6 months, and at the time that they are diminished and fully absorbed (harmlessly) into the body, another treatment will be necessary.

This “second generation” of fillers comes in at a few months longer than the previously popular straight collagen injections, which only lasted about three months due to the high absorption rate and instability.

Typical treatments that are administered with both fillers, which are in a gel formula, are injections into the nasolobial folds that get deeper and more noticeable with age. These are the lines that extend on either side of your mouth from the outside corners of your nose to the tips of the top lip.

I didn’t think that this was a noticeable part of aging on a person’s face until I looked at before and after pictures of people who had gotten this area filled with Juvederm or Restylane, and boy, it really did make a difference in how young and rejuvenated they looked.

Other areas that are great candidates for dermal filling are deeper wrinkles around the eyes, and on the forehead. They do have to be a significant depth to be treated with dermal fillers though, so be aware that those finer lines are probably not suitable for Restylane or Juvederm fillers.

Another popular part of the face that is injected with dermal fillers is the lips, which is what I had done. I chose to go with Juvederm after I talked to the doctor that performed the treatment on me, only because he said personally he felt he could work with Juvederm better on the lips because he felt it was a bit finer than the Restylane and he could work more easily with it and observed slightly better results on the lip area.

Since he felt more comfortable using this product, I decided to go with Juvederm, which cost the same as the Restylane. The cost was $500 per syringe, which is about average for a dermal filler. I loved the fact that this particular facility, called EvoMedispa in the greater Akron, Ohio area, offered to store any leftover Juvederm for up to six months for me as well.

I did end up with a little bit leftover, so I figured I would have them use the rest of that syringe as well as a new syringe the next time I went and got my lips enhanced.

So far it’s been about 4 weeks since I received the lip enhancement treatment with Juvederm, and I’m loving the results. I only asked for a very subtle plumping of the lips since I wasn’t going for anything obvious or overblown, and that’s exactly what I got.

He followed the natural line of my lips, and made sure not to overfill the top lip, keeping the natural balance of the top lip smaller than the bottom lip, which is how people’s lips are shaped in nature. The top lip is almost always significantly smaller than the bottom.

He explained that by keeping this ratio, I’d look more natural, and he was right. The procedure itself is not bad, but I have to admit, I was glad when it was over.

If you have the procedure done, you should know that you want to keep the next few days cleared of significant plans, since the likelihood of bruising locally is fairly high.

My upper lip had a bruise about the size of a kernel of corn for a few days afterward, and it took several days for the bruise to fully subside. Also, immediately after the treatment, your lips are not able to move, since you are typically going to be injected with a local anesthetic.

My local anesthetic was Lidocaine, and my lips were pretty much frozen for much of the evening after the treatment, and I was stuck at home since I couldn’t speak correctly and, well, quite frankly, it just doesn’t look pretty the day you get it done.

The treatment is not for those that are extremely needle shy, since between the injected Lidocaine and the injections of the filler itself, you will be getting injected several times by the end of the treatment. Ahh, the things we do for beauty!

    • ANSWER:
If you have money to spend at a doctor’s, I would suggest a product called Restylane. I have used it myself, and its awesome. Here’s a link: http://www.restylaneusa.com/whyrest.asp
Start there and see the whole site. The money you’re spending might be better used at an esthtician’s or a plastice surgeon’s – they do these procedures.

    Skin care for mature skin?
I bought this stuff at Sally’s yesterday: I have tried a few of the products and am really impressed.

    Daily Intensive Serum
    Nighttime Restoration Treatment
    Multi-Benefit Eye Cream
    Sensual Lip Plumper
    * awesome – doesn’t burn and looks great – makes lipstick go on smoothly
    Lip Line Correcting Treatment
    * smoothes fine lines and really conditions lips
    Age Reversing Hand Treatment
*wow- really nice, hands feel and look great

They also have a product called
Time Correcting Creme, which I didn’t buy.

Here’s an idea of what they have:

My question is: If I am using the Daily Intensive Serum, why would I need the TIme Correcting Creme? And when? In the morning? They seem to have the same use.

    Open to suggestions! Thanks.
    This describes the products

    • ANSWER:
If you are using the Daily intensive serum, then the Time correcting should not be nessesary. From what you wrote, you have products that take care of your skin both day and night. Sound like you are well on your way to great skin care.

    Avon versus Oil of Olay?
Which works better oil of olay or the new avon products for aging (i.e., wrinkle cream, lip plumper, line smoother, etc). Also, which products shoudl I use in conjunction with each other. I want to have younger, healthier skin and reduce the signs of wrinkles. THANKS!
Maybe if you recommend a product line, please also recommend WHICH products because there are sooooo many! THanks!

    • ANSWER:
      I prefer Avon products.

    Itchy Lips. Why???? Any suggestion?
My lips especially around my lips have been really itchy. I would put hydrocortisone cream around my lip and then it would get better for a little bit, and then it would itch again along the lip line. But I try not to itch my lip because it gets red because its embarassing to have a red circle around your lips. My lip used to swell but they have been getting better as I put Burt Bees and then aquaphor on top of that. In the morning when i wake up, my lips are swollen but they get better throughout the day. Sometimes, I get cracks at the corner of my lips.

    • ANSWER:
Your lips are itchy for the same reason skin gets itchy.. They’re dry, drink more water, get a medicated lip moisturizer. I hope you get better.

Bikini Line waxing – with hair removing cream?
I want to know if there are any creams available to wax the bikini line.
creams as in hair removing creams.
because u cannot use the normal creams on a sensitive area like the bikini line.
so what is my option? also temme if there are any creams available for removing the upper lip hair.

    • ANSWER:
I would steer clear of using hair removal creams on the bikini area. Although many people say “if you can use it on your face, you can use it on your bikini line” i beg to differ! It’s a super sensitive area and any reaction would be extremely painful – you’d be much better to shave or wax the area. As for the upper lip, you can get depillatory creams for your upper lip, they will be in any supermarket or pharmacy, alongside other depillatory creams.

does ambi fade cream work for this?
I have a dark line over my lip and it looks like a mustache i also have dark spots under my eyes (not bags its just dark). I had both of these forever for as long as i can remember. Will Ambi fade cream remove these? Im also using the Ambi Exfoliating wash. Should i apply the ambi fade cream after i apply the exfoliating wash or before? please help Thanks!
    can u guyz pleasee answer!

    • ANSWER:
im in the same situation! lol, i have dark skin under my eyes and a line over my lip as well! I purchased ambi’s fade cream yesterday cuz i read lots of reviews on it and evry1 says it works reallly well, they see results in 2-3 wks. However, i’m using it for the dark patches on my face and some spots. For you, I would highly recommend Burt’s Bees radiance serum. t costs .00, but it well worth it…it lasted me from August 2009 till last week 🙂 What this serum does is, over time, with daily use, it draws out those bad skin cells and gives you a natural radiant skin color. I tried finding it yesterday, but evry1 took them all, thats how u know its real gud. Try it asap…it does wonders. I saw results in 2 weeks. When it gets rid of the dark places, continue to use it daily. This serum has lots of vitamins in it that helps the skin. You should buy the lotion and bodywash of it, they have the whole line of radiance products…gud luk!

I have really bad sun damage on my face?
My face is almost full of brown spots all over my face, I’m on estrogen and testosterone. Wondering if anybody knows of an effective facial cream to help. I’ve been getting tiny blisters along my lip line, (not sure if this is connected), could I be getting allergic to the sun? I get a tingling sensation, when I look in the mirror I see tiny blisters but they seem not to progress into the big fever blisters. I get fever blisters like twice a year. Can this be a type of Herpes? also how could I have gotten it? I’m a stay at home mom 39, my husband doesn’t get them. My daughter gets a lot of them too. Thanks for your input.

    • ANSWER:
stay out of the sun for a while and use a lot of moisturizer on the face except around the lips…

LIPS… yes it sound like fever blisters which is a form of herpes… IT IS NOT the one transmitted SEXUALY

However, you can spread this to your nose, eyes, and other ares if you touch it then touch someplace else…

90% of the population has this form of herpes…
Your mother may have had it and passed it onto you because back then they were not aware that it spread so easily…

To much sun can cause break-outs..

Acne marks…Help!! How do i get rid of them?
Hi!! Well, heres the thing, I rarely get a pimple, but for the last year or two I have been getting 1 or 2 a month and some of them leave an ugly dark red spot that doesnt go away (NEVER), and also have gotten tiny holes ALL along my upper lip line (that look like black dots) those are scars for previous zids. What cream or treatment can I use to get rid of all of them? Nothing TOO expensive please…

(10 points for the smartest answer)
The black spots are not black heads, they are tiny holes that look black and they are right where my skin meets my lip at the very limit of my upper lip.
And I swear I am not touching my face, I just let them go away, but they still leave a shadow mark.
    Thanks everybody!!!

I have clown lips after accutane!!?
The corner of my lips used to rip all the time and i’ve been off of it for a year and my lips are still really dry, I o.d with chapstick and vaseline but my lips are still dry.

But my BIG problem is that now my lipline is not normal. My lip line is now a blob, and i have a dark spot on the corner of my lips making me look like a cat/clown.

I recently read somewhere that putting dishwashing liquid soap and vaseline is supposed to help but that sounds crazy.
Oh and i’ve been using fading creams like esoterica but nothing works, I feel that not many people have experienced or know what i’m talking about but any advice would be amazing.

How does a woman get rid of unwanted facial hair or the peach fuzz?
I have what I consider to be a very serious problem.I shave(with a disposable razor because the electric ones dont shave as close as I like),my peach fuzz around my chin and jaw line and also under my chin and my lip line.Im finding I have to reshave after about 24 hours, just like a man.Ive tried those womens facial hair remover creams and they dont work.In fact they irritate my sensitive skin and it burns really bad.The only thing that seems to work for me is the regular disposable razor method which I have to repeat every day and doing this is starting to irritate my skin so Ive cut back to about twice a week.I absolutely hate the peach fuzz and am looking for a more permanent method to get rid of it.I know laser hair removal is one way but this way is very expensive.Does anyone out in Yahoo land know how I can remedy my situation and as inexpensively as possible?

I would like to know if anyone has any home remedies or even products that i can buy to help this. I use monet anti aging cream for face and eyes at the mo but would like something that concentrates on the area i have mentioned. Thanks very Much ann x

    • ANSWER:
This treatment has done wonders for many. Its fast acting, low cost, uses only non harming natural products, and is beneficial to face, tightens and rejuvenates skin and noticeably lessens lines and wrinkles and other signs of aging.
See my best BEST ANSWERS (Skin conditions, Anti-aging, wrinkle cure, etc.) One person says it was working for her after only 4 days. Use a natural or organic oil (olive oil is excellent) and repeatedly massage area above lips with finger tips or first two fingers of one hand with a side to side quite strong, vigorous motion. It’s the key to it working! Skin is always shedding and renewing and massage stimulates & hastens a new healthy skin to emerge with lines noticeably reduced. Some skin clinics might tell you to only massage gently – but vigorous massage has proven to be only beneficial for many who have tried it. See clearly noticeable results in about a week, even better overtime. Initially, skin has to adjust & if experience soreness, stop & resume when you can. Keep up a massage routine after that & and you will see continued improvements. It works on slight and deep lines(takes longer)equally as well and is a very effective wrinkle treatment. Most of oil gets absorbed into skin. It’s best not to wash of any but simply splash with water and dab dry with tissues. You will find you do not need to moisturize treated areas. This is much more effective, safer (and cheaper!) than any commercial anti-aging cream or other treatment and can be used for treating any part of face.

The answer is YES! Creams designed for the bikini line are gentler to the skin. Harsher to the hair. Buying another one for your upper lip only is a wastage of money. Just use the same one.

It would definitely be easier than waxing, however, the results will not be as long lasting. Also, something to be aware of is that hair removal creams over time reduce the natural glow / elasticity of your skin (since they melt the hair off).

A healthier option would be waxing, plucking or threading your upper lip. But that would also be a more painful option.

      Good luck!

Oops! Sorry about that. You can use it, but there is a high risk of a yeast infection involved with that. Waxing the vaginal lips is a healthier way to remove the hair. Although can be very painful. If you do chose to use the cream on your labia majora make sure you sit on a toilet or the side of your bathtub. Keep your legs open and stay seated for the whole procedure. Be VERY careful that the cream does not seep into your vagina as it can cause an infection.

Many women I work with have used the cream, if taken proper measures it does not cause a yeast infection. The safer option is always waxing. This would however, be a lot less painful.

    Laser Hair Removal?
I’m sure a million people have asked something similar to this but I’m not willing to go through hundreds of posts to find my answers. I am going to have laser hair removal in January on my upper lip, bikini line, and eyebrows. What can I expect, like pain and irritation and results? I have very dark, thick hair; being Italian and Greek and my skin isn’t overly sensitive but it can become irritated by some lotions and soaps. Should I take something for the pain before hand like a Tylenol. They told me it’s going to feel like a rubber band snapping against my skin… is that true? Is there something I should do after each session apply a cream or take some meds? They have given me some answers to these questions but my experience with doctors and hospitals and all that has been that they mellow the truth… Serious answers only from people who have had Laser Hair removal or knowledgeable about it Thanks.
And how effective is it really?

    • ANSWER:
Laser hair removal works best on fair skinned people with dark hair so it should work very well for you. The reason for this is that the laser has to be able to differentiate between the hair shaft and the skin – otherwise you skin would be targeted along with the hair.

There really is no major pain associated with laser hair removal, it is not at all like electrolysis where there is discomfort. Most people suffer skin redness and very mild sensitivity in the area treated and this subsides within a few hours. However, you may feel more discomfort if you have particularly sensitive skin. You could use the Gigi Epilating Lotion Prepack, which contains an After Wax Cooling Gel which could be used after laser hair removal.

There are also home laser hair removal kits like the Rio on the market. They use a safe 808nm diverging diode based laser system. The Rio treats one hair at a time whereas a salon laser machine can treat an area of about 1cm squared.

Several laser hair removal treatments are required before permanent hair removal is achieved. It should also be noted that in some cases hair does in fact start growing again after 12-18 months. This is why laser hair removal clinics generally don’t guarantee the treatments are permanent – ask you laser clinic to clarify this.

To help weaken the hair after laser treatments I would also recommend you use Kalo Post Epilating spray or lotion as it makes hair regrowth softer and finer. This will make killing the hair follicle easier.

How to get rid of blackheads in 4 days ?
I have a lot of blackheads on the line of my upper lip. And there really noticeable. I am now self-conscious of talking to anyone face to face because you can easily see them. I’m using Biore blackhead earser thing. ( cream ) . Its not really working for me.
I need to get rid of them in 4 days because Tuesday is my first day of highschool !!
How can I get rid of these !?
    Thank you.

    • ANSWER:
omg my highschool also starts on tuesday
ususlly i just try to sqeez them out then put an acne medication on them . . but it sound like you have a lot of them . . . maybe you can try a pore clearing strip that usually would go on your nose

i dont know but if you sqeeze it and it looks like it wont come out then dont persist cuz then they will become actual inflamed zits
and if you squeeze it make sure you put some acne stuff on it so that it doesnt stay red and get all zitty
maybe you can ask your doctor or ask a pharmicist what will help best cuz they know what they are taking about

      hope it clears up soon!!

    Side effect from Hydroquinone cream?
My doctor prescribed me HQRA cream (4%) for a dark patch of skin i developed over my upper lip. He said it was a mix between too much estrogen in my body with sun damage. It looks like a mustache!

anyways, i tried it two nights ago for the first time and I woke up with a HUGE red line above my upper lip! It looks like I’ve been drinking Kool-Aid for a month straight! Obviously this too is very embaressing.

Has anyone ever had this reaction to the cream before? what can I do to get rid of it? it’s still there!

    • ANSWER:
Yes, I have had a bad reaction from hydroquinone. I had a very clear face and the hydroquinone’s peroxcidical properties caused a reaction on my cheeks giving me whiteheads all over the cheeks. Although the reaction is nothing like yours, it is quite clear that hydroquinone doesn’t suit your skin. You should go to the dermatologist again and ask for an alternate medicine. There are some over the counter medicines that fade marks like
      * Palmer’s fade marks cream
*Prefer-on scar stick (it works great)*
      *Aveeno Clear Complexion moisturizing pads
and many more … just google “cure for dark marks”

But since you have a reaction, I suggest to consult a doctor before using any of the above mentioned creams.

      Good Luck !

( I also have NO breast AT ALL..they havent grown since i was a little girl :() and i am 15…The facial hair really bothers me so yesterday i baught a Nair Facial hair removal cream for the face an upper lip…I want to use it, but i am scared that the hair will grow back darker…I want to use it on my upper lip, chin, under chin and jaw line…….What should i do? How do I make my lips less red?
my lips are big, and for the most part, they’re always red. especially when I eat. when I eat I get this weird red line on my upper lip that looks like I’m wearing lip liner or something. Is there some kind of cream or something I could put on them? A home remedy would be remarkable if there is any.

    • ANSWER:
My lips are the same way. When I’m doing my make-up I always dab a bit of concealer on my lips before putting on lipgloss so that they turn a light pink color. You could even invest in a light pink lipstick for even more coverage.

When you’re eating, always bring along chapstick. That will help keep your lips soft. There’s no way to change the color of your natural lips, but make-up can always help. So bring your lip color with you.

    Allergies cause bumps on lip?
I noticed the other day that I had a bunch of bumps the the end of my mouth. I looked it up to see if it was just chapped lips on webMD. Instead, I get the possibility of AIDs.

Not possible for me because I am a proud virgin, and unless I did something to get AIDs at work, or my dog gave it to me (I have a dog that likes to slobber me when it’s morning to wake me up okay).

Later on at work, I look at the mirror, I a bunch of tiny white bumps lined up across my upper lip. I freak out because of webMD giving me the AIDs possibility, even though I’ve never had sex before.

    I got two possiblities.
    1. I’m on birth control because I have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. I had to switch medicines 3 weeks ago because my first one put me into a depression while trying to regulate.

    2. I have a dairy allergy because I love milk, cheese, cream cheese and yogurt.

Somebody help me before I have a nervous break down!

I hate webMD now for traumatizing me.

What if I use an anti-age cream which is not for my age?
I am 28. Recently I noticed the formation of some fine wrinkles around my mouth (I had two deep expresion lines on lateral of my lips but recently some fine wrinkles seems to be formed around them.) besides my skin is not as firm as before. it is even visible in comparison between pictures i have taken recently with the ones taken 2yrs. Ago.
i decided to use anti-wrinkle cream, so I bought DNAge VISAGE day and also night creams. After buying them I noticed that it has written on the package that it’s for the ages 40 and above! What should I do? Is it harmful for my skin if I use them?

    • ANSWER:
You can try on it but stop if irritation occurs or if there’s any break-out as they might be too rich for your skin.

If nothing of the above happen, I think you will see nothing change dramatically besides moisturizing the skin. Otherwise to play safe, exchange them for something else.

    what causes acne around mouth?
I get acne around my mouth and chin, and like literally on the line between my lip and ‘normal skin’. If youre a girl I know this is hormonal, but what about for guys? I’ve been on antibiotics and they worked but my acne seems to be edging its way back. I use benzoyl peroxide cream too but that doesnt seem to do much.

    • ANSWER:
Hi, I use Epil Stop. It works really well. It’s really easy to use. Here is how to use it step by step. First, use your hands or the Special Epil Stop tool (provided) and cover the hair evenly. Wait 1 to 3 minutes. Test a small area to see if the hair removes easily, if not wait another minute or so. Lastly, wipe off the cream with a wet washcloth or with the tool. The tool is like a spatula that is designed to apply and remove the creme so your hands stay clean. Use the flat side to smoothen the creme. Use the grooved side to remove the creme and hair. I also use the Perfect Finishing Neutralizing AfterWash. It helps prevent skin irritation and red bumps. It turns pink to show where there is chemical residue. It’s very easy to use. Just lather and rinse until it runs clear. I love this line because it’s so easy to use and lasts twice as long as shaving. It also smells great. There are 2 fragrances, Cosmopolitan Berry and Margarita Lime. It is also really fast, it takes about 3 minutes. So you are just 3 minutes away from beautiful, smooth, hairless legs. Hope this helps! =)

Hi, you can try one of the natural treatments for eczema from the Internet – some of them do work. For my eczema I use herbal cream by Champori quite successfully. It takes just a couple of weeks to clear the spots and they stay clear for months on end.
Try it: champori comes with money back guarantee so if it doesn’t work for you – it’s free.

I want to work on developing my own beauty line. I particularly want to make eye cream, moisturizer, lip gloss, a few other things. However, I’m wondering about what to include to preserve the products. I want to largely use just natural products, but I’m clueless as to how to preserve them for sale! Can someone help>?

    • ANSWER:
I go to a specialty store (link enclosed) that has 100% natural products. In the ingredients for the body butter, it contains vegetable oil, beeswax, & cocoa butter (theobroma cacao seed butter). I do not own the face lotions, and do not have a wrapper for the soap to check for you, so it would be a good idea to call them & see.

      Good luck!

    • ANSWER:
Perhaps you should look into having dermal filler treatment, although 16 is quite young for this. What you are describing sounds like your naso-labial fold. This becomes more prominent in many people as they age, and is probably the most common area for dernal fillers to be used
